Whitehaven Beach – From a Different Perspective

A visit to the Whitsundays wouldn’t be complete without a trip to one of Australia’s most iconic beaches. Whitehaven Beach.

Whitehaven beach is located on Whitsunday Island, located off the coast of Airlie Beach the largest of all the 74 Whitsunday Islands.

Accessible by Boat, Seaplane, and helicopter from either Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach, its pristine 7km stretch is one of Australia’s most hashtagged beaches, and the minute you step on the crystal clear silica sands you will understand why.

Whitehaven beach sand is 98% pure silica, which means it doesn’t retain the heat, so even on a hot day, you can happily walk barefoot down the sand.

We have visited Whitehaven beach on multiple occasions, spending the day at the Southern End of the beach, a popular spot with tour companies. This end has some great nature walks where you can see the local wildlife.

Other times we have spent our time at the Northern end (Hill’s Inlet) and watched as the turquoise water, and swirling sands create a different pattern on the shore

So on our last trip North we decided to do something different, we booked a helicopter flight with Hamilton Island Air, called the Heart Reef and Whitehaven stopover.

This scenic flight allows you to fly over the Great Barrier Reef, including the iconic Heart reef, over Reef world, and Hill Inlet before landing on a secluded stretch of the beach, we landed halfway between the busy Northern and Southern ends of the beach and had the secluded beach all to ourselves.

The Helicopter Pilot then set us up with a delicious little picnic, with an assortment of fruit, muffins, cheese, and biscuits. With some cold water and a lovely bottle of champagne, he then wandered up the beach, leaving us alone on the secluded pristine beach.

After about an hour relaxing on the beach, we traveled back to Hamilton Island, with memories to last a lifetime.

Come see why you should take a flight over Whitehaven beach.
